Facebook Fails To Improve Diversity Despite Rapid Hiring

TechCrunch

Facebook’s team is still dominated by white and Asian men. Diversity improved only slightly despite Facebook adding 2897 employees this year, according to its new demographic report. The 10,082-person company has only 1% more women as a share of all employees than a year ago despite a 40% increase in head count. And the company made no quantifiable progress growing its percentage of non-Asian ethnic minorities across the whole company or in its tech jobs.

The biggest area of progress was that Facebook’s non-tech employee percentage of women grew from 47% to 52%. Any other gains were limited to a 1% increase in the female or hispanic demographic’s share of employees.

Facebook does not disclose the exact counts of employees in different categories. Increasing the percentage of women as a share of all employees by 1% would increase the total number of women working at Facebook by several percent.

Perchè i motociclisti non considerano gli Harleysti

Perchè i motociclisti non considerano gli Harleysti

Marcello Cividini

Twitter Board Says It Will Only Consider CEO Candidates “Willing To Make A Full-Time Commitment To Twitter”

Twitter Board Says It Will Only Consider CEO Candidates “Willing To Make A Full-Time Commitment To Twitter”

TechCrunch

Twitter’s board of directors gave a brief update to its search for a new CEO, saying it would only consider candidates “who are in a position to make a full-time commitment to Twitter.”

This seems like a relatively obvious statement for a CEO candidate running a company like Twitter but, at the same time, seems a little bit like a nod at the current — and potential — situation of Twitter’s interim CEO Jack Dorsey running both Twitter and Square. That kind of relationship has worked for Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, but it appears that for the time being it isn’t something Twitter’s board is satisfied with.

[related_articles]In the statement, board member Peter Currie said the board “has the utmost confidence in the strong management team Dick has assembled and in Jack Dorsey’s ability to lead the company on an interim basis” while Twitter searches for its next…

EFF’s 2015 Data Privacy Report Lauds Apple, Dropbox, Slams Verizon

TechCrunch

Digital rights organization the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has published its fifth annual Who has your back? report into online service providers’ transparency and privacy practices when it comes to government requests for accessing user data.

The organization notes a general transformation among major Internet players to be more transparent with users about data requests over the past four years. But for its latest report it’s tightened evaluation criteria, arguing that “it’s time to expect more from Silicon Valley”.

The report awards companies up to a maximum of five stars for performance in various areas, such as following what the EFF judges as “industry-accepted best practices”; telling users about government data demands; disclosing policies on data retention disclosing government content removal requests; and taking what it dubs a “pro-user” public policy position and specifically opposing government mandated backdoors in digital services.

Industry-accepted best practice (which gains a company one star) here breaks…

These are the most polluted neighborhoods in your city

These are the most polluted neighborhoods in your city

Fusion

Some cities are known for their cleanliness, and some are notorious for smog and poor air quality. It’s a fact of the carbon-burning world we live in, coupled with the geographical features of the places we occupy. In Los Angeles, the surrounding mountains keep emissions inside the valley, making its air the most polluted in the nation. In Miami, fresh ocean air is constantly pushed into the city, giving it some of the best quality air in the nation.

But within these cities, there are disparities. Often, neighborhoods with higher percentages of minorities have lower air quality than their whiter counterparts. Minorities face around 40 percent more exposure to toxic air pollution overall, according to a study conducted last year by the University of Minnesota.

This week, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released a tool aimed at exposing these disparities. It allows users to map out their…

Just F*cking Do It

My husband delivered a keynote one time to an audience of startups and technology nerds. His advice to them was “stop talking about it and just f*cking do it”. Everyone laughed and nodded. This happens a lot in technology and business. People spend a huge amount of time talking about what they are going to do; pontificating, planning, researching, and discussing – but then fall down on execution.  So things either never get off the ground or they lose steam shortly after they launch.

The exact same thing happens in our lives when it comes to creating change, starting something new, or embarking on a personal goal attempt. We often build things up in our minds and make them appear way bigger or more complicated than they actually are. If I would have thought about running for 30 minutes without stopping before I began running on day one, I would…

Ancora, i…
